Tap the Square

Hear a square's coordinate. Tap it on a blank board. This is the mirror of Square Color — turning the auditory cue into a spatial answer. Together they make coordinate fluency reflexive.

What it trains

Auditory-to-spatial coordinate fluency.

Coaches talk through positions in algebraic. Tournament directors call moves. Books are written in moves. You should be able to hear "d4" and your hand should already be on d4.

  • Builds the audio→spatial channel the rest of chess instruction depends on
  • Eliminates the "wait, which side is the kingside" hesitation forever
  • Pairs with Square Color for full coordinate mastery
Who it's for

Anyone who reads a book and gets lost by move 6.

If you find yourself recreating positions piece-by-piece while reading a chess book, your coordinate channel is too slow. This is the fix.

  • Players studying from books or videos
  • Anyone wanting to play blindfold games (start here)
  • Coaches and parents teaching kids the basics
How it works

Inside one drill.

Each session is short, repeatable, and built around a single skill.

1

A coordinate is spoken aloud

Voice or on-screen text. You can mute audio and rely on text for noisy environments.

2

You tap the square on a blank board

The board has file/rank labels in the smallest difficulty, fades them out as you level up.

3

Correct answers earn streak XP

Wrong answers show the correct square for half a second so you can update your mental map.

4

Optional: piece-on-square mode

Pro adds variations: "place the knight on f5", "the bishop is on a long diagonal — where could it reach?"

Progress & XP

Speed first, accuracy compounds.

Most players hit 95%+ accuracy within two weeks. The remaining gain is response time — the difference between hearing a coordinate and your hand already arriving there.

  • Tracks accuracy and average tap-to-correct time
  • Files you tap slowly get a weighting bump
  • Achievement: "Eyes closed" — pass a set with audio only, labels off
